The Ocean Technology Lab covers the engineering needed to explore, monitor and responsibly use seas, coasts and large water bodies.
Research areas
- Underwater vehicles: remotely operated vehicles (ROV) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), including buoyancy, thrust and control.
- Marine instrumentation: temperature, salinity, depth, turbidity and dissolved-oxygen sensing.
- Underwater acoustics and sonar, since radio waves do not travel far in water.
- Desalination and water treatment: reverse osmosis, membranes and energy recovery.
- Coastal and offshore engineering: wave loads, corrosion protection and marine structures.
- Ocean energy concepts: wave, tidal and offshore wind.
Student work
- Build and pool-test a small ROV with a sealed electronics enclosure.
- Design a low-cost water-quality buoy that logs data and transmits it wirelessly.
- Model the energy use of a small reverse-osmosis unit.
Note
Telangana is inland, so open-water field work is planned through partnerships with coastal institutions; on-campus work uses tanks, pools and simulation.
